Smart Home Weekly: A Week of Reckoning For Hardware Startups

Mike Wolf Apple Arrayent Google Leeo Nest Smart Home Weekly Startups Wink

It's been a tough week in the connected home business, as evidence of a potential shakeout has started to rear its head.  Wink is potentially up for sale, while smart lighting/security company Leeo just had a big round of layoffs. If you don't already know (but I think you do by now), hardware is hard folks. It can eat the best entrepreneurs alive, and in new categories that require market education, it can be doubly treacherous.  I was talking Phil Dumas this week, CEO of Unikey, a company which, perhaps not coincidentally, purposefully avoided becoming a hardware company with its software licensing...

These past few weeks have been interesting on a number of fronts, and I don't expect things to slow down anytime soon. A recap: Lots of Google. I/O is tomorrow, and already we've got news of Google's apparent launch of a IoT-centric OS that has looks like transform the home router business, and what appears to be the company's exploration of new and creative approaches to next-gen smart home interfaces. Not to be out-rumored, Apple apparently has a new Apple TV SDK coming out at WWDC, and there's some potential significant implications for the smart home.  Then there's the IPO filing....

With the release of Apple's wearable last month, developers for every major smart home device are busy creating an app for a device that could singlehandedly make wearables mainstream. A handful were ready at launch, and this past week SmartThings, a Samsung company, jumped into the fray.  Outside of Apple Watch, the...

Smart Home Weekly: HomeKit, Bosch, ADT's Ad, Nest Protect Fiasco

Mike Wolf ADT Bosch Google HomeKit Nest Nest Protect Smart Home Weekly

This is the smart home weekly for the week of February 22, 2015.  Stories I look at this week include the possibility of HomeKit missing its mark, ADT's attempt to separate the security men from the boys with a new ad campaign, Bosch's continued growth in IoT and smart home, and the rant about Nest Protect from a Google employee. You may notice I'm trying something new with the newsletter. Normally I combine all the week's stories in one post, but that means the newsletter gets pretty long and each story doesn't have its own link. While I am still going to have...

It's the Smart Home Weekly Update for the week of February 16, 2015There have been some stories the last few weeks highlighting both the security weaknesses and privacy concerns over the smart home. There’s also a growing sense that certain categories in the smart home are a little over-invested (this is probably also something that can be said for the broader IoT). I touch on both of these in this week's weekly.  But first I wanted to mention we have a date for the our smart home party at SXSW. NextMarket Insights, along with our great sponsors the Z-Wave Alliance and GoControl,...
