This is the Smart Home Weekly, Cinco De Mayo edition.  As always, if you haven't subscribed to get this every week in your inbox, do so here.  The last week or two has been fairly slow for smart home news, unless of course we're talking about the Apple Watch. With the release of Apple's wearable last month, developers for every major smart home device are busy creating an app for a device that could singlehandedly make wearables mainstream. A handful were ready at launch, and this past week SmartThings, a Samsung company, jumped into the fray.  Outside of Apple Watch, the...

Are We At the Beginning Of A Smart Bulb Price War?

Mike Wolf Belkin GE Philips Smart Bulb WeMo

While no device category in the relatively young smart home market can really be called mature, if there is one that is 'more mature' than others I'd say its the smart bulb space. The market, which I still expect to continue to grow exponentially in the coming 3-5 years, is the one with the greatest degree of competition. At CES, there were probably more smart bulb products than any other category and because of this competition we're seeing the early signs of a price war. Mike Wolf Apple Apple TV Conscious Home GE Google HomeKit Nest Patent security SXSW Z-Wave

This past week I was in Austin moderating a smart home panel for SXSW. I also hosted a party and had a great time meeting readers of the Smart Home Weekly and listeners of the Smart Home Show. It was a pretty awesome experience The panel itself was on the topic on the smart conscious home, and while overall it was a good conversation, I wish I'd had a chance to dig into Google's new patent filing around a "security scoring system" before the panel. This is because while the security aspects of the patent are intriguing, the sheer amount...

GE Launching Series of Bluetooth Smart Home Products

Mike Wolf Bluetooth Bluetooth mesh GE Z-Wave

If you needed any further evidence that Bluetooth is picking up steam in the smart home, look no further than GE.   The company, which has for years been shipping a number of popular Z-Wave based wall switches and lighting control/appliance modules under a partnership with Jasco, is now bringing Bluetooth versions to market. The technology was developed by Avi-On, a Bluetooth smart home networking startup, and while the company had previously released news that they were working on developing these products for GE, this is the first time that this much detail - such as device internal photos and user guides...

Smart Home Weekly: Intel-Lantiq, Dropcam Departures, Lockitron Bolt

This is the Smart Home Weekly for the week ending February 6th, 2015. Overall there's been some interesting news the last week and a half. I'd say the biggest is news of impending new products from Dropcam (and their exec departures). Before we get to that, a few mentions of upcoming events and other cool stuff: We have a date for our Smart Home Panel at SXSW (the only smart home panel at the entire festival). It's Tuesday 3/17, 3:30-4:30 at the JW Marriott room 328.  Hopefully the SXSW folks will update their site and app with the details soon, but...
