Smart Home Weekly: ADT Acquired, Amazon Hiring Like Crazy In Smart Home

Mike Wolf ADT Alexa Alljoyn Amazon Canopy Dash Echo IoTivity

This past week was a big one in connected home. The acquisition of ADT by Apollo and the merger between the two leading IoT standards showed we are in a stage of heavy transition across the broader connected home space. With the ADT news, we saw the biggest player in home security get acquired, possibly setting off a period of greater consolidation in home security at a time of huge market disruption resulting from new smart home and IoT technologies. On the standards front, a huge bombshell dropped last week with the launch of the Open Connectivity Foundation, an organization backed by both Intel and...

Mike Wolf Alljoyn B8ta IoT OIC OnHub retail Scout SmartThings UPnP Z-Wave

While most everyone in connected home business being either head's down preparing for CES or slowing down for the holidays (or both), there has been some interesting news coming out in advance of the big show in Vegas.  Maybe the most interesting is the launch of b8ta, a new retail store for IoT. I write about it here and will be publishing a podcast interview with Phillip Straub, cofounder of b8ta, later today. You'll be able to find that here by this evening. OIC + UPnP: Sign Of Reduced Fragmentation In IoT's Future?

Mike Wolf Alljoyn OIC UPnP

Much like today there was lots of the noise and interest around the physical layer networks (back then it was HomePNA (phoneline) vs. HomePlug (powerline) vs HomeRF and Wi-Fi (wireless), but the more important part was figuring out how disparate devices on any network could discover each other and join the network. The second wave of the connected home was all about distributed media, and from that we saw the birth of DLNA, which built upon the...

Could AllJoyn-Powered Windows 10 Machines Tip Balance In Smart Home?

Mike Wolf alljoyn allseen Microsoft

Time makes a good point in that the addition of AllJoyn capabilities to Windows 10 could be a big deal. Microsoft has been pretty quiet on the IoT front, but an smart home-AllJoyn powered operating system from Microsoft could provide an interesting counterbalance to HomeKit and Weave. Also, let's not forget Windows typically has had strong UPnP support, and UPnP has recently been pushing the fairly pervasive home networking discovery protocol has been pushing into IoT. I do think Microsoft will likely have some interesting new IoT and smart home initiatives they will spring on us this year, and Windows...
