Yale Puts Hold On NFC Smart Lock

Just had an interesting conversation with Jason Williams, the GM of Residential Locks for Assa Abloy (the company behind the Yale lock brand). He told me that while their Zigbee and Z-Wave lock business continues to hum, the NFC lock they announced at CES has been put on hold indefinitely.

The reason was the fairly messy NFC landscape when it comes to mobile phones.

"Unlike Bluetooth, where implementations on phone are fairly standard, we didn't see enough stability with NFC to confidently launch product right now."

I asked him about a Bluetooth smart lock for residential and while he didn't have anything to announce at this time, he's not ruling it out.
