Smart Home Weekly: B8ta Test, Z-Wave Ups Security, UPnP+OIC, SmartThings Goes Premium

Mike Wolf Alljoyn B8ta IoT OIC OnHub retail Scout SmartThings UPnP Z-Wave

While most everyone in connected home business being either head's down preparing for CES or slowing down for the holidays (or both), there has been some interesting news coming out in advance of the big show in Vegas.  Maybe the most interesting is the launch of b8ta, a new retail store for IoT. I write about it here and will be publishing a podcast interview with Phillip Straub, cofounder of b8ta, later today. You'll be able to find that here by this evening. There's also been news on the smart home technology front, with OIC absorbing UPnP and Z-Wave upping its security game...

SmartThings Introduces Scout Monitoring As First Premium Service

Mike Wolf Scout security SmartThings

From almost the get-go, one of the most promising aspects of the SmartThings DIY smart home offering was as a "platform" for third party devices, applications and related services. The company invested early on in application developer tools and hired business development folks to water and feed their developer ecosystem, and the end result was an impressive array of apps and devices that work today with SmartThings. Mike Wolf Iris Revolv SmartThings

Someone recently commented to me via a survey that I don't mention SmartThings often enough, either in the Smart Home Weekly or on the Smart Home Show.   I think they're probably right. Let me offer an admittedly weak rationalization: I think part of the reason for a lack of SmartThings' mentions is the company hasn't been making much news, either negative or positive. Instead, the company has been puttering more or less quietly along since the Samsung acquisition, blending into the background, with the occasional piece of news about the forthcoming SmartThings 2 hub. But now things might be changing, as the...

Revolv Support Coming To An End

Mike Wolf Revolv SmartThings

Lots of news on the smart home hub front, but this news perhaps passed under the radar of most: According to Smart Home Show listener Caleb, he got news via the Revolv support team that as of December this year, support for the Revolv hub will be ending. According to his exchange with the Revolv team via email, they've notified him that while the hub should continue working, the company (which got acquired by Google last year) will not be supporting the hub beyond December.  While this isn't huge news, it's just indicative of how Google never really intended to...
